Facebook and PH Government Internet Service

The Philippine Government and Facebook partnered up to create “ultra high-speed” broadband connection. This will make the government a third player in the telecommunications industry. But this is not the main reason they made the Luzon Bypass Infrastructure (targeted by 2019).

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) signed the SECURE GovNet project. The agreement was also signed by Facebook and DICT on Novermber 15. It stated that Facebook will supply the government with at least 2 million Mbps. This is approximately equal with Globe and PLDT. But why does the government want to improve the country’s internet service?

Duterte’s National Broadband Plan

The National Broadband Plan intends to lessen internet cost and improve internet service. This will also implement Free Public Internet, National Government Portal, and other projects.

Internet Access to Isolated Areas

There are a lot of areas in the Philippines that does not receive enough service. This is commonly among the far-flung provinces. These places can now have internet access with SECURE GovNet project. DICT also stated that they will lease specific network systems. They are referring to electrical cooperatives and small-scale internet service providers.

Facebook’s missionary initiative to bridge global digital divide

“One of the things that we’ve been bidding out recently is our global network infrastructure.” Facebook APAC Sourcing Manager Nico Roehrich said. He added that they want to expand the capacity, apply, and adopt latest systems technology. The agreement matches what Facebook wants to achieve.

The Philippines has the slowest average internet speed in the Asia Pacific. Akamai Technologies provided the result in the Global State of the Internet Report. A faster and improved internet service will benefit the country. This also gives an advantage for your business. Potential and existing customers can connect to your website faster. This means they can search your products or service quicker.
